I want to thank you for reinforcing my decision to buy the Generac XP 8,000 generator. Due to time restraints resulting from my business activities I did a limited amount of research & hoped that I made the right decision. Like you, I wanted the quietest generator I could get that would put out the temporary power that I wanted. I live in the Mountains of Northwest, North Carolina & last year was one of the worst winters we had for ice storms & a number of snow days with an accumulation of more than twelve inches which almost guarantees we would loose power. Initially, I bought a Dyna tri-fuel generator at the advice of a friend. After I bought it I found out that you loose efficency when you run the generator on propane & you need to have the fuel line pressure tested to insure the generator will run properly. After using propane once I decided it wasn’t that difficult to keep a supply of gasoline on hand. Having said that, I live on 25 acres & have 2 barns & several outbuildings I can utilitze for storage. I used the tri-fuel generator for 5 or 6 years & was very satisfied with the performance but I had the opportunity to purchase a Generac 6,500 for 1/2 price & couldn’t pass up a deal like that. The down side of the Generac is it isn’t an electric start & at 70 years old I felt it was time to give the Generac to my kids & get myself an electric start generator.
When looking for my replacement generator, like you, I wasn’t willing to pay the $ignificant price difference for the Honda, Onan or other so called super quiet generators. I paid $1,250.00 on sale for the XP at Lowes Hardware(usually priced at $1,349.00) & I tested it today with complete satisfaction. I ran a refrigerator, freezer, well water sump pump, several lights throughout the house, 36 inch TV & a microwave. I tested the amperage during normal load & surge load conditions & I was well within the recommended parameters to prevent an overload. Obviously, I turned on one appliance at a time & gave the appliance time to get past the start up load before turning on the next appliance. I have a gas furnace & the Generac pulled the
place the genertor at the end of the house opposite the master bedroom & even though I am a light sleeper I was able to sleep just fine. I started both the Generac & my old generator just to see if the decibal difference & the Generac is much quieter. Both run at full RPM & don’t have the auto idle feature which is unimportant to me because I always have a load on the generator so it would’t get a chance to idle anyway.
I purchased a used Briggs & Stratton generator, 5500 watts running. It looks like new, starts easily but will not run at full RPM unless I play with the choke. With the choke full open it quits. I like the size and weight and it doesn’t need electric start for me. Now I regret not buying a better name engine.
A 3500 watt Briggs and Stratton never worked upon delivery, 3-month saga of calls and emails for warranty service finally led to the company direct shipping a replacement. Hopefully it works out but very disappointed in what happened with the original. Service center said they are junk and had another new unit in with the same apparently hopeless defects.
