Later during my discussion with the generac rep, I mentioned Honda and although she would not say the word 'HONDA', she made a number of statements clearly telling my I had hit the mark. However, I did find that the Cummins Onan Portable Generators has a 58 dB(A) rating at 7 feet (Honda does their measurement at 9 feet), putting it right there or quieter than Honda
Honda has a great video on the sound of portable generators and you can clearly tell the difference, but that difference comes with a price, a big price!
The biggest generator I found that Honda makes is the EU6500iSA model; it has a noise level of 60dB(A) at rated load (they call this 'Super Quiet'), runs for 4.7 hours an comes with a 3 year warranty.

Honda suggests the Eu6500 portable generator should cost $5,000 (Wow!); however, I called all the dealers within 40 miles of my place and found that two were willing to sell it to my for $3,284, that's $1,216 savings by just calling around!
I did not buy the Honda portable generator, it was just too much money!
FYI - Andrew at Coffman Electric (616) 452-8708 was the ONLY dealer who gave me a great price right off the bat. I didn't have to haggle, he didn't give me some lame sales pitch, just an excellent price right. The other dealer who was willing to match the price, but started of high, I won't bother mentioning.
The Cummins/Onan is rated 58 dBa at 7 meters, not seven feet as stated above.
The Honda 6500is generator is best of them all when considering noise level , reliability and
the 3 year warranty ..As for price well , sometimes you get what you pay for ..i have been to as many
web sites as the next guy and read favorable comments concerning the Honda till you start talking
price and then the tune changes ..What i say to them when they ask me why i own 4 Honda generators
i simply respond by saying that you use a generator for the most part for emergency power or portable
power if working or living remotely and you want it to run and run and run without fail ..when you sleep at
night you are secure in knowing it will still be running in the morning ….I took care of the gasoline fume
issue by converting all my generators over to propane fuel …Oh! what a difference it makes , I suggest to
anyone its the way to go . Buy a kit and go for it . They run close to $200 for a tri-fuel conversion . A final note
worth mentioning is that i have owned Generac’s , they perform okay but they will deafen you . As for the
Chinese knock-offs they suffer with long running times and break at the manifolds and muffler areas due to vibrations..The only one i would recommend is the Kipor pure sine wave models , They are cheaper than the Honda but i question their dependability in comparison ..Thanks for reading my comment. hmm thank you for the information about the quietness of honda generators. I did not know this. Also, you might want to look at various inverter generators, they are a bit more expensive as well, but quieter and more efficient than regular portable units..
Propane Portable Generators are becoming more common and offer the advantage of less maintenance (no carburetor issues to deal with), better for the environment, and cheaper to operate in the long run. Price is approximately 10% to 20% more.
With the onset of hurricane Irene and thinking I would like to make the investment on a quality genset, I chose a Honda EG4k having calculated my watt demand and the ability to turn things on and off if I needed to in a post storm no power situation. I bought it 2 days in advance ,tested it for an hour watching my amp draw with the appliances I turned on and off, typically my useage was 5 to 15 amps. 4 hours of run time and it failed, the dealer thought it was a carb prob, it would shut itself off in 5 sec after starting, unplugging the stator plug proved what it was….. They {Honda} dont replace defective units you’re stuck with a fixed lemon……
I bought a house that already has all the wiring and electrical box needed for a generator, and a place to put the portable generator tin the garage to roll it right out to the driveway. That’s good. Day 4 of no power after Hurricane Irene I think it’s time to get a portable generator of my own. I need a bit of advice please. All the posts seem to be from gentlemen with a certain mechanical expertise. As a common sense woman with small kids in the house, any advice on getting a portable HONDA generator? Is it really as easy as pouring gas in a mower?
I do have propane for my kitchen stove, should I hire a plumber to reroute the propane to outside the garage and forgo having to deal with the gasoline?

CJ. Please if you can care for children you can put gas in a generator. I am a retired woman that lives off the grid. I pour gas and move my portable generator around daily.
I have a Honda generator that I bought used several years ago. It works great. I have both the key start and pull. One to two pulls and it starts. Good luck.

We have two honda generators one is great except for broken motor mount and other is almost impossible to get started not worth having.So you see all depends on the unit itself.I have homelite with 11 hp briggs that has been perfect just change the oil after every big storm never had to pull more than twice to get going.One time running four days straight.
